I’ve been amassing a collection of photos and notes about restaurants in Belfast, but only just had a chance to sit down and put together a proper post. When I started teaching on a university course in February, I ended up spending quite a bit of time in the university area, and decided to try out a bunch of eateries. I was open to try out anything and everything, but seeing as the student area always had a whole bunch of meal deals and such, I toyed with the idea of doing a series of blog posts about relatively cheap eats. The aim was to find lunch (or perhaps even dinner) for under £5, and to that end, I present to you the first of the Belfast Fivers: Build a Burger!

Burgers at the ready! I had a BBQ Double, while my friend had a vegan burger (much to her delight).

My friend's vegan burger and vegan chips. I returned at a later date for a vegetarian burger (with cheese), and it was pretty awesome!

My BBQ Double was certainly very nomtastic!

My BBQ Double was certainly very nomtastic!

I ordered: The BBQ Double (£4.95) on one occasion (where you don’t have any choice about the fillings, but you get a drink), and a Vegetarian meal deal (£5.20—extra 20p from cheese) on another. Both came with a hearty serving of chips.

Quality: Excellent in every way: delicious buns, tasty patties, and wonderful toppings and sauces. The chips were crispy and well-seasoned.

Value: You get a lot of food for £5, and on both occasions, the leftovers I packed away made for a very satisfying second meal.

Atmosphere: Your average fast-food restaurant, really. I’m not a fan of the chairs, which made my (problematic back) hurt after a while.

Service: Pretty good. Some of the burger-builders were a little clueless, while others were excellent and knew everything about their menu.

Dietary: Absolutely fantastic for vegans—if you’re a vegan who’s craving for a burger, definitely check out this place!

Other notables: They do a “The Big Lad” challenge, where you can try to down a 36oz/1kg beef burger within 30 minutes. One of these days… You can also get a loyalty card: buy ten burgers, and get one free.

Overall: 9/10
